Join us for the Sausalito Bike Bus, a fun and casual way to ride to school, daycare, work, and beyond! The "bus" is really a group of friends, neighbors, and families organizing regular, community-led bike rides. We travel together to make the trip safer, more social, and an active start to the day.
It's simple: meet up, roll out, and enjoy the ride!
Join us on our main route designed for safety and fun as we roll toward MLK Academy.
The times listed below are our departure times. If you're hoping to grab a coffee or a pastry (i.e., bribes!) from one of our stops, please plan to arrive a few minutes early so we can leave right on time!
Current Main Route: MLK Academy
1st Stop: Golden Gate Market (map)
Depart at 8:00 AM
2nd Stop: Equator Coffee (map)
Depart at 8:10 AM
Destination: MLK Academy
Arrive at 8:30 AM
We prioritize safety! Helmets are mandatory for all riders. Depending on the group size and composition in most places we keep kids on the sidewalk on Bridgeway to ensure the ride is slow, safe, and comfortable for kids of all ages and abilities. The focus is on fun and community, not speed.
If you need to rush off to work or other commitments, you are welcome to drop your child off with us at either the Golden Gate Market or Equator stop, we just ask that you check with a ride organizer in advance. We'll make sure they get to school safely. We often have a cargo bike on hand in case little legs need a break!
Why is it called a "Bike Bus"? A bike bus is a group of cyclists riding a set route on a regular schedule—just like a regular school bus—but it's powered by pedals instead of gas! There's no set driver or official organizer; it's a casual, community-led event where everyone rides together for company, fun, and safety.
Can I suggest or start a new stop or a new route? Yes! The Sausalito Bike Bus is a grassroots movement. We'd love to see new routes pop up to other schools or destinations! If you are willing to organize and lead a new route or stop, please email us to tell us what you have in mind! We can help you promote it and connect with other families in your area.
Can my child ride alone? It depends on their age:
Grades TK–5: We require an adult to be "on point" for your child during the ride. This can be you, or a friend, neighbor, or family member whom you've specifically asked to keep an eye on your kiddo during the ride.
Middle School: Middle schoolers are welcome to roll solo!
What if my child doesn't go to MLK Academy? You are still welcome! The bike bus is open to all community members. Whether you're heading to a different school, a local daycare, or just joining the ride for the social experience, we're happy to have you. Roll with us!
What should my child wear? Layers are key! Kids often get warm very quickly once they start pedaling, even on cool mornings. We recommend starting with a light jacket or sweatshirt that can be easily removed and tied around their waist or put into a backpack. Helmets are, of course, a must!
Does the Bike Bus get canceled if it rains? Yes, typically. For safety and comfort, the Sausalito Bike Bus usually only runs in dry(ish) weather. If the forecast calls for rain or if the roads are wet, we generally cancel the ride for that day. Check the Upcoming Rides section above or our email updates for the final word!
